Working as a chimney sweep in Victorian London is a tough life for young Oscar Sole. His master, a man he calls the Devil, is an evil sort. He punishes for pleasure. Unable to bear the torture any longer, Oscar makes a break for freedom. The Devil tries to burn him alive as he scrambles up a chimney. Miraculously, despite becoming engulfed in flames, Oscar finds himself unhurt.
The fateful night is forgotten and for many happy years, Oscar and his friend, Nathan, scrape a living on the streets of East London, pilfering and taking odd jobs wherever they can. Even the threat of encountering Jack the Ripper pales in comparison to the horrors of Oscar’s past. However, after a series of chilling events, the boys are captured and sent to a workhouse where the Devil resides over the routine torture of hundreds of inmates. The monster imprisons the boys in the workhouse dungeon and leaves them to rot. Close to death, the pair discover a doorway to an enchanted world called Nevermore. But, the Devil pursues them and captures Nathan with the help of a band of villainous pirates. Oscar is forced to embark on an incredible adventure to rescue his friend, through a perilous world full of dark magic and strange beings. He soon learns there are those who believe his immunity to fire means destiny has marked him for a special purpose. They believe Oscar can restore peace to Nevermore’s fractured lands, whose history has been written in blood for thousands of years. They believe that the Emperor of Dragons has returned. |
